Other Side of Me music CDs She is also a talented and witty lyricist, as can be heard on her tribute to "Money" (which should become a standard), "He Ate the Apple," and a song called "This Ain't Yo Daddy's Kind of Blues." Scott's band, Smoke, supports her perfectly, with Bill Ireton contributing some blazing guitar solos. On the modestly titled Masterpiece, which is a bluish R&B set, the singer wrote or co-wrote all but one of the dozen songs. Scott stars throughout the program (including sometimes overdubbing her voice as a "choir"), is assisted by a fine cast of musicians, and on "Too Good to Keep to Myself" shows that she can excel as a pure blues singer too. E. C. Scott - Hard Act To Follow

Artist: E. C. Scott
Title Of Album: Hard Act To Follow
Year Of Release: 1998
Label: Blind Pig
Genre: Blues

Notes:
Recorded in San Francisco, this crisply produced follow-up to female blues singer E.C. Scott's 1995 COME GET YOUR LOVE is as solid an example of contemporary blues practice as one is likely to find anywhere these days. Tasty fills and figures spun by guitarist Early Times infuse this spirited session with a soulful, funky groove in which drummer Curtis Nutall shines particularly. As for Scott herself, she is a no nonsense singer unaffected by overdone blues or soul mannerisms.
Her voice rarely strays from a comfortable mid-range; a touch of Gladys Knight here and there , especially on the softer, subtler numbers. Scott wrote 10 of these 11 tracks, so she has something to say, and the uncluttered production allows her room enough to get her message across directly. Her subjects span the range of domestic sorrows and joys--infidelity, gettin' it on in a "Queensize Bed." "If You're A Good Woman" finds Scott calmly berating a friend's tolerance of domestic abuse. Needless to say, the accompanying music supports these sentiments aptly, so neither Scott nor her songs are overbearing or preachy. Fans of the real life blues take note.
Recorded at Mobius Music, San Francisco and Live Oak Studio, Berkeley, California. Includes liner notes by Bill Dahl.

Tracklist:

1. Steppin' Out On A Saturday Night
2. Tell Me About It
